Nuclear power in Lithuania

In Lithuania, all nuclear reactors had to close and a new construction of a nuclear power plant was prevented by a referendum in 2012. After the shutdown of the two Ignalina reactors, Lithuania changed from an electricity export country to an import country. Today, 70 percent of the electricity imported comes from the EU, including Sweden and Finland; the statistics do not show how much nuclear power there is underneath. However, the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astrawez, 50 kilometers from the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, whose first reactor is due to go on line in December, is now even the subject of government protests.
