Reduction of uranium compounds to uranium dioxide in semi-industrial scale

Description
Developments leading to nuclear grade UO2 production output in the hundreds of kilograms per day level have been presented. Details of the batch type;, semi-continuous and continuous furnaces utilized have been indicated and their respective operational behaviour evaluated in the context of impuritity pick-up during processing. Also described are the quality control procedures that assured consistence in the high purity grade of UO2 produced, satisfying internationally adopted criteria. The proposed objective of attaining semi-industrial scale production capability was reached, with procedures and equipment preponderantly developed in Brazil; which will permit the expansion of production in the near future. Apresentam-se desenvolvimentos que permitiram alcancar a producao de UO2 de pureza nuclear na escala de centenas de quilogramas por dia. Detalhes de fornos intermitentes e continuo utilizados sao indicados, analisando-se os respectivos comportamentos operacionais no que se refere a contaminacao durante o processamento. Descreve-se o controle de qualidade, que permitiu assegurar consistencia no elevado grau de pureza de UO2 produzido, satisfazendo criterios adotados internacionalmente. Atingiu-se o objetivo proposto de, com procedimentos e equipamentos desenvolvidos preponderantemente no pais, demonstrar capacidade de producao em escala semi-industrial, que permitira expansoes a curto prazo.
