A method and device for well logging by measuring the lifetime of neutrons

Description

The present invention relates to a method and a device for well logging by measuring the lifetime of neutrons. That device comprises an instrument containing a source of high-energy neutrons, lowered into a bored shaft so as to generate a thermal neutron cloud, intensity modulated as a function of time, in the environment. The phase-angle of those thermal neutrons with respect to the high-energy neutrons provided by the source is determined, and from that angle is derived the lifetime of the neutrons, which is related to the materials of the sub-soil formation surrounding the shaft. This can be applied to determining the petroleum content of the sub-soil formations surrounding drill holes

Abstract (French)

La presente invention concerne un procede et un appareil de diagraphie des puits par la mesure de la duree de vie des neutrons. Il comprend un instrument contenant une source de neutrons d'energie elevee, descendue dans un puits fore afin de produire un nuage module en intensite de neutrons thermiques en fonction du temps dans les milieux environnants. L'angle de phase de ces neutrons thermiques par rapport aux neutrons d'energie elevee produits par la source est determine et on tire de la mesure de cet angle la valeur de la duree de vie des neutrons qui est une fonction du type de materiau de la formation terrestre environnant le trou de sonde. Ceci est applicable a la determination de la teneur en petrole des formations terrestres environnant les forages
