By removing the enormous volumes of nitrogen prior to burning natural gas, the remaining flue gas becomes concentrated carbon dioxide which may be deposited and utilized. The article deals with the work being done by the Norwegian company Aker Maritime in this field, in particular the so-called HiOx technology. The HiOx technology is based on well-known principles. Instead of cleaning the flue gas, or producing hydrogen from the natural gas and burn it, the gas is burned in pure hydrogen that is separated from the air. This results in a waste gas consisting of water vapour and carbon dioxide. This is a cleaner method than the other suggested methods which emit substantial quantities of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Unlike the HiOx method, the competing methods also emit nitrous gases, NOx, and chemicals
