Recent high energy heavy-ion experiments at CERN
Description
Recent results from high energy heavy-ion experiments at CERN are reviewed. In particular, fluctuations in the pseudorapidity density of charged particles at heavy-ion collisions in many experiments have been analyzed by means of the method of scaled factorial moments (SFMs). Thus, some results of analysis performed by means of SFMs are reviewed first, focusing on the WA80 and EMU08 collaborations. Then, preliminary results concerning the transverse energy flow obtained from HELIOS-Emulsion experiments are reported. And finally, the report describes the EMU09 experiment, which is aimed at demonstrating the production of charmed particles in 200 GeV/N 32S-nucleus collisions. No evidence for any possible signal of the formation of QGP has been identified so far in the global observables (e.g. analysis with ET or total nch). Recently, however, analysis of specific signatures such as rapidity density fluctuations, two- and many-particle rapidity correlation, and charmed particles production has come to be conducted widely. Other SFM methods have been proposed and some research groups have found evidence for intermittency by means of those methods. Better methods and theories should be developed to solve the questions of QGP physics. (N.K.)
