The objective of this Safety Guide is to provide recommendations on how to meet the requirements for assessing the safety of near surface repositories. The Guide summarizes the most important considerations in assessing the safety of near surface repositories and recommends the steps to be followed in performing such assessments. This Safety Guide covers safety assessment of near surface repositories for the disposal of radioactive waste in solid form. It includes consideration of the operational and post-closure phases but emphasizes post-closure issues, since the assessment of operations of near surface repositories is similar to that for operations at other waste management facilities. This Safety Guide does not cover safety assessments for geological disposal, for mine and mill tailings or for residual waste arising from restoration activities and remaining on the site. (author)
