Inelastic scattering of high energy particles with light nuclei and cluster structure of nuclei

Description

To elucidate the structure of light nuclei and the nature of many-particle reactions at high energy of falling particles an experimental study has been made on production processes of complex particles (H2, H3, He3, He4) in interaction of 660 MeV protons with 9Be, 10B, 11B, 12C, 27Al nuclei. The study has been made using the technique of ΔE-E detectors. Thin targets of beryllium, aluminium, without substrates have been used. Absolute cross sections of production of hydrogen and helium isotopes are measured in the energy range of 2-36 MeV and in the angle range of 0-150 deg. The error is less than 10 per cent. It is concluded that kinematic characteristics of complex particles in interaction of protons with light nuclei change rather weakly at the transition from one nucleus-target to another, and so the uniformity of kinematics of particles can be noted for all nuclei studied. But absolute production cross sections of secondary particles change rather noticeably, while the number of protons or neutrons in the nucleus-target changes for a unit. The mechanism of production processes of secondary particles is discussed in the framework of the cluster structure of nuclei
