Study of benchmark matrix effects in the neutron die-away assay of fissile material in 200l drums

Description
An experimental study of eighteen different matrices on the accuracy of fissile material assay in 200l drums has already been reported. This work has been successfully extended to include the effects of matrices typical of BNFL waste arisings. Three benchmark matrices described as non-combustible and shreddable have been examined with the result that the mean compensated response for the matrices together with that of a matrix-free drum vary from 0.97 to 1.16. Although assay errors for the non-combustible matrices (with a standard deviation of 25%) are greater than in the earlier more comprehensive study, the matrices themselves are significantly more absorbing to thermal neutrons.
