Description

The Euratom LCT coil ran successfully through the LCT test programme in the International Fusion Superconducting Magnet TEst Facility (IFSMTF) at Oak Ridge, USA. The coil was operated successfully at 9 T with 15 950 A as single coil and at 9.2 T in the toroidal configuration. In a first series of discussions on testing of NET model coils wound by NET toroidal field coil conductors it was proposed to use the background field of two LCT coils in a cluster arrangement. The available space in the TOSKA facility at Karlsruhe is limited by the size of the existing vacuum vessel. Therefore the use of only one LCT coil as background coil is investigated. The missing ampere turns of the second LCT coil shall be compensated by the operation of the Euratom LCT coil at temperature and urrent levels promising the obtainment of a field strength between 10 T to 11 T. It was investigated by finite element calculations that a suitable mechanical structure keeps the stress levels at acceptable limits. The electrical and thermohydraulic properties of the different components of the coil were assessed considering a 20 kA operation. Nothing was found which prevented such an operation current. In a suitable two coil arrangement LCT coil-NET-TF-model coil (TWIN) obtainable stress and field levels were investigated and optimized. (author). 11 refs.; 4 figs.; 4 tabs
