Spin polarized 3He: a ''new'' quantum fluid

The physical properties of a 3He fluid are studied, in which all nuclear spins are parallel to each other (fully polarized 3He). At low temperatures, significant differences can exist between this polarized fluid and normal 3He. The origin of these differences is purely quantum mechanical and arises from the Pauli exclusion principle. At low densities, only the transport properties of the gas are modified. At higher densities. The equilibrium properties (virial coefficients) are also changed by the nuclear polarization. Changes of the liquid-vapour or liquid-solid equilibrium pressures, as well as modifications of the 3He-4He mixture phase diagram are predicted. This article gives a preliminary theoretical study of these new effects. Experimental prospects are briefly discussed

Abstract (French)

Un fluide de 3He dont tous les spins nucleaires sont paralleles (fluide totalement polarise) est un systeme quantique dont les proprietes a basse temperature peuvent etre tres differentes de celles du fluide de 3He normal (non polarise). L'origine des modifications attendues est purement quantique et tient au principe d'exclusion de Pauli. A faible densite, seules les proprietes de transport du systeme sont modifiees. A plus forte densite, les proprietes d'equilibre du gaz (coefficients du viriel) sont elles aussi affectees par la polarisation nucleaire. On prevoit egalement des effets sur la pression d'equilibre liquide-vapeur, celle d'equilibre liquide-solide, certaines modifications des proprietes des melanges liquides 3He-4He. Cet article est consacre a une etude theorique preliminaire de ces effets nouveaux. Certaines methodes experimentales qui permettraient d'obtenir de l'helium polarise sont brievement discutees
