High burn-up rim project. (III) Examinations to verify attainment of the target irradiation conditions

The High Burn-up Rim Project (HBRP) is an international project aimed at investigating the properties of high burn-up UO2 and to identify the conditions necessary for the rim structure formation. The irradiated material was obtained from the IFA-601 experiment where disks of UO2 including several variants were irradiated in the form of disks at different temperatures between 600 and 1200 oC. The paper presented an analysis which confirmed that the disks were not oxidised and had successfully achieved the burn-up levels ≤ 100 MWd/kg UO2 predicted by the in-pile sensors. EPMA showed a nearly flat bum-up profile across the disk diameter, whilst optical microscopy confirmed a well developed rim structure. Future work includes measurement of thermal diffusivity and heat capacity
