Uranium and radium concentrations in Florida phosphate fractions by GeLi spectrometry
- 1. Univ. of Florida, Gainesville
Description
Florida's phosphate ores contain significant concentrations of uranium and its decay products. As the ore is processed the fractionation of the principal radionuclides, 238U and 226Ra, can be traced with gamma spectra obtained with GeLi spectrometry. Both uranium and radium can be simultaneously determined at a cost of about one-tenth that of a commercial chemical analysis. Split samples with a number of other laboratories indicate excellent results. Discussion includes sample size, calibration with NBL assayed uranium ore, counting times, ingrowth of radon daughters, and sources of error
