Description
An integrated study has been developed to remain life assessment of IR-206 irradiation facility IV category (wet-storage) comparatively by Indian irradiator II-category (dry-storage). The probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) was performed for those irradiators to develop the quantified indicators of safety for various situations. Results were used to identify different systems and components for this work. Various world accidents have been studied to investigate the likelihood of such failures and assessment of safety provisions against such failures. This work discusses development of safety indicator in details and touches upon the other aspects as and when required. The extended of any facility life should be predicted in a manner that likelihood of accident is low. Eleven recommendations deal with system retrofitting, change in operation and maintenance practices and further testing and qualification to get added confidence as part of life extension programmer. This study is unique in three respects; (a) it is a comprehensive In this re-assessment work has been performed on two cobalt-60 irradiation facilities. (b) An integrated work has been developed and applied for safety reassessment of two irradiators where (ISOMED) is the first one for Sterilization of Medical Products and considered one of the oldest, category- II type Cobalt-60 based Gamma Irradiation Facilities in the world and IR-206 irradiator that considered one of the modern category-IV type (wet storage) and (c) A procedure has been developed in support of regulatory re-licensing and life extension of the IR-206 Cobalt60 Gamma Irradiation facility. The work shows IR-206 irradiator was modernized through changing different mechanical and electrical systems, Also water system was designed and located on irradiator concrete roof to resist and cool fire accidents inside irradiation room to maintain radiation safety
