Sedimentary fluxes: paleo-productivity and paleo-hydrology of the southern ocean during the last 150000 years before present

The aim of this study was to establish whether an increase of the biological production in high latitudes could explain the reduced values of atmospheric CO2 during glacial times. To approach this problem, we estimated the glacial/interglacial variations of paleo-productivity in the Southern Indian Ocean using the variations of biogenic silica accumulation rates. On the other hand, detrital accumulation rates were used to follow the paleo-circulation variations in the same area. In the Sub-Antarctic zone, biogenic silica accumulation rates accumulated during the last glacial period are higher than during the Holocene. This is probably the consequence of the northward Polar Front Zone shift. In the Antarctic zone, north of 55 deg. S, these biogenic silica accumulation rates were at least similar to Holocene rates except on the Kerguelen plateau. Thereby, it seems that paleo-productivity variations in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean cannot explain the atmospheric CO2 decrease during glacial times. In this sector, detrital accumulation rates show that cold periods are characterized by a great increase of volcano-detrital materials originating from the Kerguelen plateau. This might be the result of an increase in oceanic circulation in response to atmospheric circulation forcing. (author)
Abstract (French)
Les objectifs de ce travail etaient d'etablir si l'hypothese d'une augmentation de la production biologique aux hautes latitudes Sud pouvait etre retenue comme explication des faibles teneurs du CO2 atmospherique pendant les glaciaires. Pour aborder ce probleme, nous avons suivi les variations glaciaire/interglaciaire de la paleoproductivite dans le secteur Indien de l'Ocean Austral par l'intermediaire du bilan des flux biosiliceux mesures par diffractometrie X et corriges des phenomenes de dissolution. D'autre part, les flux de detritiques ont ere utilises pour apprecier les variations des paleocirculations dans la meme region. En domaine Subantarctique, les flux de silice biogene qui se sont accumules pendant les periodes glaciaires, sont superieurs a ceux rencontres a l'Holocene. Ceci est probablement le resultat de la migration vers le Nord de la zone du Front Polaire Antarctique. En domaine Antarctique, ces taux sont restes au moins aussi importants au Nord de 55 deg. S, sauf sur le plateau de Kerguelen. Globalement, il semble que la variation de la paleoproductivite dans le secteur de l'Ocean Austral n'a pu contribuer que tres modestement a la reduction du CO2 atmospherique. Dans le secteur Sud-Est Indien, la variabilite des taux d'accumulation des detritiques et du materiel magnetique montre que les periodes froides (stades isotopiques 2, 4 et 6) sont caracterises par un accroissement important des apports volcano-detritiques issus du plateau de Kerguelen. Ceci pourrait etre la consequence d'une activation de la circulation oceanique superficielle en reponse a celle de la circulation atmospherique. (auteur)Files
