Operational and safety aspects of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant
Description
A short description of the main and safety related systems as well as of the management structure of the Ignalina NPP is given. The two Ignalina units are based on the Soviet RBMK-type reactor design, but they are larger, updated versions of the same concept. The plant is to carry out urgently needed safety upgrades. The safety improvements already implemented after the Chernobyl accident as well as the new Safety Improvement Programme and recommendations on how to enhance the safety of the Ignalina NPP are presented. An in-depth safety analysis of the plant must be performed by the end of 1995, and a new license will be granted by the Lithuanian Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI).
