State of the art high temperature superconductor coils
Description
High temperature superconductors have matured considerably in the past year. Critical current in magnetic field of bulk, polycrystalline, textured, high-Tc superconductor wires has surpassed NbTi. Technologies for the production of these oxide ceramic wires in long lengths are also being developed. The mechanical properties of these wires, especially when made as microcomposites are adequate for winding coils of all sizes. Normal zone propagation and cryostability of these conductors are also under study. As a result of the above work, moderate field DC magnets are being built and tested for a variety of applications. The prognosis for these materials in AC rotating machinery is good. Multifilamentary materials have been developed to provide good AC loss properties under a variety of conditions, and the methods for terminating these wires are being developed. The materials also have exceptional high field capabilities when operated at low temperatures, raising the prospect that 20 + Tesla magnets operating at temperatures of 4K and higher can be built. It is anticipated that extensions of the coil manufacturing technologies developed for large, low-Tc superconductor magnets can be applied to large, high-Tc superconductor magnets. In this paper data and sample coils are shown demonstrating the above capabilities
