Immobilization of uranium-rich high-level nuclear waste

Description

The immobilization of used UO/sub 2/ fuel recycle waste having a high concentration of uranium has been addressed by studying devitrified titanosilicate (Na/sub 2/O-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-CaO-TiO/sub 2/-SiO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2+x/) glasses and some boro- and aluminosilicate glasses containing UO/sub 2+x/. The devitrified titanosilicate glasses contained the crystalline phases CaUTi/sub 2/O/sub 7/ and brannerite (UTI/sub 2/O/sub .6/), and were more durable than the boro- and aluminosilicate glasses, especially when the titanosilicates were prepared by sol-gel techniques. Silicon leach rates after 90 days at 900C in deionized water were ∼2 x 10/sup -9/ kg/(m/sup 2/.s), with the glassy phase leaching more rapidly than the crystalline CaUTi/sub 2/O/sub 7/ or brannerite phases
