The HERMES polarimeter

Description

The HERMES hydrogen target was operated during 1996 and 1997 in the HERA electron ring at DESY to study the spin structure of the proton by deep inelastic lepton proton scattering. An Atomic Beam Source (ABS) injects an atomic hydrogen beam of high intensity and high proton polarization into a storage cell, made of thin aluminum and coated with Drifilm. A sampling tube attached on the side of the cell forms a sample beam whose polarization is analyzed by means of a Breit-Rabi Polarimeter (BRP). A Target Gas Analyser (TGA) measures its degree of dissociation. During running with the 27.6 GeV positron beam the target ran smoothly at nuclear polarization of the atoms above 0.9 and molecular fraction below 10%
