On decay of the Kaluza-Klein vacuum

Description
We consider the Witten mechanism for decay of the Kaluza-Klein vacuum. The energy of the Witten solution for the space-time geometry is calculated to be positive and time-dependent. It is also shown that the decay can be viewed as going through a spontaneous formation and subsequent expansion of a bubble of a new geometrical vacuum, whose explicit structure is unknown at present.
