Radioanalytical methods for determination of hafnium in zirconium

Description

Two methods for the determination of hafnium in zirconium without separating the elements are suggested. The calculation method involves the substoichiometric version of the radiometric correction technique and the results are improved so as to allow for the effect of the interfering element (Zr in this case). The method requires knowledge of either the amount of Zr in the solution, or the total mole quantity of both elements, or the weight of the alloy under analysis. The technique of isolation by varying quantities of the reagent permits simultaneous determination of both Zr and Hf concentration; however, the exchange constants for both elements should be available. The exchange constants for Zr anf Hf extraction by di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid from perchloric and nitric solutions and for phosphate precipitation of these elements from sulphuric acid solutions were obtained and used in the determination of Hf in the presence of Zr(up to tenfold excess) to within 3%
