Description

The 4-D flow technique of magnetic resonance imaging provides the velocity fields of blood flow over time, present in some cardiac cavity [Pineda, et al., 2014]. Is of interest to analyze the information in these fields to detect any abnormality in the functioning of the heart. Due to the shape and movement of this organ, is normal to find the formation of vortices in the blood flow, witnessing and abnormal behavior of the vortices is a sign of inadequate functionality [Pinochet, et al., 2011], which would help the doctor to detect a possible cardiac pathology. There are several criteria for the identification of vortices, the most used are the Q Criterion and the Lambda2 Criterion [Jeong, et al., 1995]; both are similar in the sense that they start from the velocity gradient analysis, so is necessary to evaluate their detection capacity [Evin, et al., 2019], since the quantitative characterization of the vortex flow could provide an objective tool to evaluate function in certain areas of the heart [Elbaz, et al., 2014]. The aim of this work is to carry out a comparative study between these criteria using the theoretical-physical model Burgers Vortex. Using this model allows an analytical analysis in order to establish advantages and disadvantages between both criteria, demonstrate its precision to determine the size of the vortex tube and characterize the consequences of the variation of physical parameters of the model in the identification methods. The results show that the two criteria are successful in detecting the main vortex, the Q Criterion is superior for its postulation. The purpose of contrasting is to obtain analytical conclusions, prior to use in real 4-D flow data. (Author)
