Relative intensity of the superdeformed band in 192Hg

  • 1. Liverpool Univ. (United Kingdom). Oliver Lodge Lab.

Description

High spin states were populated in 192Hg with the reaction 186W(13C,7n) at a beam energy of 105 MeV. The targets consisted of four 350μgcm-2 self-supporting foils of 186W. A total of 118x106 γ-rays were detected with the TESSA 3 multidetector array and coincidence matrices of Eγ1 versus Eγ2 were created for those events associated with folds ≥11 and folds ≥16. The known 192Hg superdeformed (SD) band is illustrated. The absolute intensity of the band was estimated to be ∼ 5% that of the 7n exit channel in the fold ≥11 matrix. The relative intensity function for the SD band is compared with those produced in two reactions with different beam and target combinations, 160Gd(36S,4n)192Hg at 162 MeV and 176Yb(22Ne,6n)192Hg at 122 MeV. These intensity functions have been corrected to take account of internal conversion and are normalised to the transitions immediately above the point of de-excitation. Within the illustrated uncertainties the normalised intensity functions for the three independent reactions are identical. These three reactions also populate the SD band with a similar absolute intensity and a comparison of these data do not suggest the presence of any entrance channel effects. (author)
