TL measurements for γ-radiation dosimetry in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

As the A-bomb γ-ray evaluation research institutes using thermoluminescence (TL) in Japan, the groups at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Nara University of Education, and Hiroshima University have been participating since T65D (Tentative 1965 Dosimetry). With a focus on these groups, this paper reports the outline of research results up to the DS02 report. The previous DS86 report was prepared after the 1986 Hiroshima Conference, before which time it was said that Life Span Study (LSS) based on TL was accompanied by an overestimated risk factor of leukemia and there were four conferences to review it. As general common matters, in the item of the principle of dosimetry based on TL, this paper explained the following: (1) TL, (2) estimation of A-bomb γ-ray dose using bricks and tiles, (3) sample purification method for TL measurement in dating, (4) TL glow curve based on sample refining method, and (5) pre-dose technique. In the item of TL measurement method of quartz for estimating A-bomb dose, this paper explained TL measurement device, samples used for dose estimation, and important items in sampling for TL measurement. After that, it explained the measurement results of A-bomb γ-ray dose by each of two groups. (A.O.)
