Comparison of compressive creep characteristics of sand-cast commercial zinc-aluminium alloys

The compressive creep data for sand-cast commercial Zn-Al alloys No.3, No.5 and No.2 was correlated using an empirical equation of the form: f(ε) = Atσ/sup n/ exp(-Q/RT). The nominal stress range applied was 20 to 100 MPa, Whereas the test temperature range was 70 to 160/sup o/C (0.50-0.63 T/sub m/). It has been shown that the creep data over the whole stress and temperature range could be well correlated by the above equation where n = 5.1 and Q = 103 kJ/mol for alloy No.3, n = 4.2 and Q = 108 kJ/mol for No.5, and n = 3.8 and Q = 99 kJ/mol. Based on this creep equation, design stresses were calculated using the experimental data. The creep results for alloys No.3, No.5 and no.2 were compared with those of zinc alloys ZA.8 and ZA.27 obtained by another researcher. (author)
