Laser heated dE/dX experiments in Japan
Description
Experimental studies on interaction of low-energy heavy ions in laser ablated plasmas showed increased charge stripping and enhanced stopping power. The interaction was measured by injecting oxygen beams with energy ranging from 2.4 to 5.6 MeV into target plasmas. Two types of plasma targets were used. One was formed by irradiating a polyethylene plate or lithium layer with a line-focused 6 J TEA CO2 laser. Another was a spherically expanding plasma of LiH irradiated with a 4-J Nd-glass laser. A proton beam of 350 keV was also used for the LiH plasma to examine the Coulomb logarithm terms. The experimental stopping power is in good agreement with theoretical evaluation for partially ionized plasma
