Description

These proceedings describe the latest R ampersand D efforts on improved particulate control devices as well as ongoing issues of operational cost and compliance. Overall, particulate control remains a key issue in the cost and applicability of fuel switching, furnace and duct sorbent injection, spray dryers, fluidized-bed combustion, municipal solid waste, and advanced power generation processes. Interest in air toxics control further emphasizes the need for developing high-efficiency particle collectors. Volume 2 presents baghouses and advanced particulate control technologies. Baghouses were discussed as one of the solutions for control of toxic metals, which are concentrated in fine particles. These could be used with injection of activated coke or other adsorbents for control of mercury and other vapor-phase species. Interest in pulse-jet baghouses is increasing among utilities, AEs, and original equipment manufacturers. The work EPRI has funded in the last two years has encouraged consideration of pulse-jet baghouses as a cost-effective particulate control technology, especially in light of potentially more-stringent emission limits. The use of electrostatics to improve baghouse performance seemed to regain interest. Flue gas conditioning received significant attention as a simple technique for improving the performance of baghouses and ESPs
