Revised radiation safety standards for tritium compounds

Description
Substantiation of radiation safety standards for 5 classes of tritium compounds now in use (oxide, gaseous, insoluble, organic soluble substances and predecessors of nucleic acids) is presented. The calculation scheme, based on the concept of limitation of critical organs exposure, is used. The tritium quality factor is determined to be 2 rem/rad. Standards for the tritium oxide and gaseous tritium increased by a factor of 1.5 to 30 as compared with that from radiation safety standards = 76. For three classes of tritium compounds revised standards, more strict than the norms for the tritium oxide, are substantiated. The norm of contamination of equipment and personnel skin surface with tritium is worked out to be; DZsub(A) = 10-8 Ci/cm2. Introduction of the new system of standards requires creation of methods for differential tritium monitoring in the environment and in human body
