Radiation enhanced diffusion and radiation induced segregation in pure nickel and iron-chromium-nickel ternary alloys

Description
Radiation-enhanced diffusion coefficients for chromium in nickel during 100 kev He+ ion bombardment to 1.2 dpa have been determined at temperatures from 400 to 600 deg C. The measurements were made by 'best fitting' the observed implanted chromium profile after irradiation to theoretical profiles generated from the original unirradiated implant profile using a model describing the expected changes in terms of enhanced diffusion and induced segregation. The experimentally determined values of Dsub(cr)sup(*) are found to be lower than those predicted by standard theory and possible reasons for this are discussed. Results are also presented for qualitative measurements made on diffusion and segregation of manganese implanted into Fe-Cr-Ni ternary alloys. A variation is seen, in both processes, with change in nickel content. (author)
