Options, expectations and realities
Description
This power point presentation discussed the need for frontier gas as supply cannot keep up with the increased demand for natural gas. TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. and Westcoast Energy have formed a joint venture in support of a Mackenzie Delta pipeline project. The two companies have been involved in every major Canadian pipeline project in the last 15 years providing access to North America's five natural gas mega markets. In addition, TransCanada, Westcoast Energy and Foothills Pipelines Ltd. will pursue Alaskan pipeline opportunities. This paper presented a map of the proposed 1850 km route for the Mackenzie Valley pipeline which will transport 0.8 to 1.2 Bcf/d of natural gas. The estimated cost for the pipeline is $2-$2.5 billion U.S. A map of the proposed Foothills Alaska Highway Pipeline was also included. It will follow a 2,800 km route and will transport 2.5 to 4.4 Bcf/d of natural gas. Its estimated cost is $6-$8 billion U.S. Pipeline options include the Dempster lateral as well as connecting both onshore and offshore gas from the Prudhoe Bay to Mackenzie Valley pipeline. A table indicating potential time lines for the projects suggests that the Alaska Highway Pipeline will be in service before the Mackenzie Delta pipeline project. Some of the key principles of northern development were addressed including the needs of indigenous people. Northerners appear ready to support pipeline development provided it is done in an environmentally responsible manner that supports sustainable development. 15 figs
