HI environment of high redshift quasars - a VLA search for cosmological HI

Description

The scientific aims, design, and performance of a VLA P-band search for H I emission at redshift z = 3.3 in two fields (one containing seven QSOs) near the north Galactic pole are reviewed, and preliminary results are reported. The relevant physical parameters are considered in detail, and the search strategy and some technical problems encountered are discussed. No line sources were detected, implying an upper limit of a few times 10 to the 15th solar mass on the amount of H I present in these regions. 12 references
