Theoretical incoherent scattering functions for photons scattered by atoms and K-shell electrons

Waller-Hartree theory and analytical Hartree-Fock atomic wave functions have been used to compute incoherent scattering functions and integral Compton scattering cross sections for photons scattered by K-shell electrons and atoms with atomic number Z <= 54. Agreement between the present theoretical values and samples of available experimental results are in general satisfactory, except for photons scattered by the K-shell electrons of iron. In the cases of photons scattered by the K-shell electrons of Ag and Sn, where comparision with other theoretical methods is possible, present results of the incoherent scattering functions are found to be in better accord with experimental data. This study also suggests that the Waller-Hartree theory is adequate even for the calculation of the integral K-shell Compton scattering cross sections, at least for the atoms considered here.
