What are petroleum products used for? Mainly for transportation - 53% of worldwide consumption in 2009 according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) - but also, significantly, as raw products for the petrochemical industry and, to a lesser degree, for the production of heat and electricity. There is practically no substitute that can compete with petroleum on a wide scale for the purpose of transportation; but several substitutes are possible in the two other cases.
