Critical radiation safety issues during K130 cyclotron maintenance
- 1. Accelerator Radiation Safety Section, Health Physics Unit, Health Physics Division, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)
- 2. Health Physics Unit, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata (India)
Description
The challenges in radiological safety aspects and the rigorous radiation protection procedures adhered during maintenance of the room temperature cyclotron (K130), particularly in the primary components (Dee, deflector, faraday cup, beam stoppers, beam viewers, RF panels and central region) inside the machine bunkers is described. Along with the description of the scenario of radiological hazards, the stringent practices being followed is described which otherwise would end up in unplanned significant exposure to the maintenance personnel and an imminent danger of widespread radioactive contamination to non active areas including white zones
