Description

Since 1981, BRGM has been developing a method for systematically studying all the factors that can influence the evolution of a waste storage site, and their interactions. One of the phases of this work has been to quantify the links between the factors in relative terms, and to model them in order to develop realistic scenarios. These operations are carried out using a simulator called CASTOR (Automatic construction of scenarios for the evolution of a radionuclide storage site). Initial simulations have shown that some of the key mechanisms controlling site evolution need to be represented more realistically. These mainly concern the evolution of climates, weathering and erosion processes, and the relationship between stresses and hydraulic parameters. The simulation program will have to be modified accordingly to take these mechanisms and their interrelationships into account simultaneously. These initial phases of study highlighted the essential factors: climate and glaciation, weathering and erosion. It therefore appeared necessary to deepen our understanding of their mechanisms in order to better simulate them. This is the aim of the present study. The results are presented in 4 reports, entitled: 1 - Evaluation of weathering and erosion rates in various contexts; 2 - Coupled simulation of weathering and erosion: the HERODE model; 3 - Simulation of the influence of glaciation on deformation and flow in a sedimentary series; 4 - Current equivalents of past climates - The basis for bioclimate modeling. The main results of each report are summarized in a final document. The 'modeling and figuration of results' aspects of the study were not the subject of a specific document. They were integrated into each of the studies. It was not possible to carry out coupled simulations of the various CASTOR modules on specific sites.
