Description
Differential cross sections for inelastic π± scattering from 40Ca leading to the longitudinal 3-(3.74) and 5-(4.49) excitations for incident energies across the Δ-resonance are calculated in a semi-microscopic framework consistent with elastic pion scattering from the same nucleus as well as with elastic and inelastic scattering from lighter nuclei. A satisfactory description of the process is achieved at resonance, whereas discrepancies at 116 MeV suggest that the π-nucleus repulsive interaction known from fits to elastic pion scattering is also present in the longitudinal transition operator. At 292.5 MeV the cross section is seriously underestimated and cannot be understood within the present form of the model. We discuss possible extensions of the model. (orig.)
