Technology for production of radioisotopes 99mTc and 131I for medicine at WWR-K reactor

  • 1. Institute of Atomic Energy NNC RK (Kazakhstan)

Description

Development of nuclear medicine in Kazakhstan is restricted by lack of local production of most necessary radioisotopes. Basic medical isotope is Technetium-99m, which is used for more than 80% nuclear diagnostic procedures. World demand for Technetium-99m is increasing, and further growth is predicted. Iodine-131, along with some other iodine isotopes, is also widely used for diagnostics and therapy. Both these isotopes are produced in nuclear reactors
