Description

Full text: Traditionally, a unique and main element constitutes a metal alloy, which has commonly lower contents of secondary elements. High-entropy alloys use major multi-elements at quasi-equivalent atomic proportions, and a single phase in solid solution is formed. Recently, the concept of the high entropy to multi-principal elements alloy (MPEA) is accepted. In this context, the aim of this work is to develop an AgAlTiZn alloy based on the concepts of the MPEA. The alloy is prepared by mixing elements powders, and subsequently pressed at 600 MPa. Then it is sintered at 750 °C for 24 h. X-ray diffraction, microhardness, compressive test and scanning electron microscopy are carried out. Dissolved amount of Al content is observed into a major phase of Ag-Zn and the intermetallic TiAl is also characterized. A reasonable mechanical property is attained when the mix of principal phases is provided. The compressive yield and ultimate strength of 350 (± 35) MPa and 740 (± 74) MPa are reached, respectively. A high densification of 95 (±2)% is also be attained. Although a single phase is not constituted, the examined composite shows compatible properties with those traditional engineering alloys. Additionally, all elements that compose the alloy are biocompatible, indicating a potential application in orthopedic prosthesis. (author)'
