Preliminary definition of the design of a nuclear reactor for research and radioisotope production using natural uranium and heavy water
Description
A study was conducted about the evolution of the Brazilian importations of radioisotopes, from the beginning of the 70's since they have been increasingly used in the Country. In view of the limited production capacity of radioactive isotopes now existing in Brazil, a nuclear reactor type (natural uranium and heavy water) was defined, for research and production of radioisotopes, wich, besides providing, at least partially, the Brazilian needs of said isotopes, permits a large national participation in its project, construction and operating maintenance. The processes for heavy water production have been analyzed and it could be detected what is the best alternative for the production thereof, in low scale, in Brazil. The options concerning the definition of the main components of the reactor were justified and its most important features were determined, in relation to the neutronic and thermal aspects, being so defined its most significant parameters. The annual quantities were estimated, in terms of total and specific activity, for the radioisotopes that could be obtained by means of the proposed reactor, which, by now, are participating, to a large extent, in the total of Brazilian importation of radioactive isotopes. Foi realizado um estudo sobre a evolucao das importacoes brasileiras de radioisotopos desde o inicio dos anos setenta, ja que os mesmos vem tendo utilizacao crescente no Pais. Frente a limitada capacidade de producao de isotopos radioativos, atualmente existente no Brasil, foi definido um tipo de reator nuclear (uranio natural e agua pesada) de pesquisa e producao de radioisotopos, o qual, alem de suprir, ao menos parcialmente, as necessidades brasileiras desses isotopos, permita grande participacao nacional no seu projeto, construcao e manutencao em operacao. Analisaram-se os processos de producao de agua pesada e verificou-se qual a melhor alternativa para a producao da mesma, em pequena escala, no Brasil. Foram justificadas as escolhas relativas a definicao dos principais constituintes do reator e foram determinadas, de modo preliminar, suas caracteristicas mais importantes em relacao aos aspectos neutronicos e termicos, e definidos seus parametros mais significativos. Estimaram-se as quantidades anuais, em termos de atividade total e especifica, de radioisotopos, que poderiam ser obtidos por meio do reator proposto, os quais, atualmente, vem tendo grande participacao no conjunto das importacoes brasileiras de isotopos radioativos.
