Changes in the exposure dose rate in Belarusian forests occurring in the near and remote zones of the Chernobyl radioactive fallout

Description
The 1988-1999 dynamics of the exposure dose rate in radioactive-contaminated forests was analyzed. It is determined that the most intense drop in the gamma-background occurred within the first years after the accident. In the years 1996-1999 the exposure dose rate decreased annually by 5%. Soil moistening is currently a major factor that governs the decrease in the exposure dose rate. Within the above span the level of the absorbed doses from the external gamma-radiation by the biota of forest ecosystems was 0.5 to 2 Gy. (Authors)
