Environmental aspects of the San Onofre steam generating cleaning for Units 2 and 3

  • 1. Southern California Edison Co., San Clemente, CA (United States)

Description

Southern California Edison (SCE) in conjunction with Framatome Technologies Inc. (FTI) recently completed the steam generator chemical cleaning at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, units 2 and 3. The environmental aspects of the project deal with compliance with all federal and California regulations regarding the San Onofre National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, San Onofre Stormwater Program, San Onofre's nonradiological air quality control program, San Onofre's hazardous material/waste treatment permits, emergency response protocols, and mixed-waste processing. The San Onofre management decision to clean the steam generator allowed a 3-month period to obtain all environmental permits and to address all environmental aspects of the cleaning. Since the cleaning, SCE and FTI have worked closely to treat and process the waste solvents
