Critical heat flux study for cooling design of the spallation neutron source solid-target system. Effect of heat flux distribution

Description
Heat transfer experiments have been carried out in relation to the N-Arena solid-target system of the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) project. Since maximum heat density in the solid target is estimated to be as high as 1000 MW/m2 at 0.6 MW proton beam power, heat removal from the target can be a vital problem. The present paper investigates the effect of axial heat flux distribution on CHF due to the proton beam profile by systematical CHF experiments using a thin rectangular channel with uniform and non-uniform axial heat flux distributions simulating a coolant channel of the proposed spallation neutron source. CHF correlations which can be used for design calculations were proposed based on the obtained data. (author)
