Mixed-ligand complexes in the system of zirconium (hafnium) - 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol - acetic acid (its chloro derivatives)

Mixed-ligand complexes have been studied in the Me-PAR-X systems where Me=Zr, Hf; X=CH3COOH, CH2ClCOOH, CCl3COOH. The complexes Me:PAR:X=1:1:1 at pH 1.5-5.0 and Me:PAR:X=1:2:2 at pH 5.0-9.0 are formed. The stability constants for the complexes have been calculated and the molar absorptivities estimated. The complex stability changes in the order Zr>Hf>Ti, the molar absorptivity decreases in the order Ti>Zr>Hf. A correlation between the stability constants and molar absorptivities has been found. Solvent extraction of the complexes has been studied. The mixed-ligand complexes are best of all extracted into water-saturated n-butanol. The formation and extraction of the complexes in the Me-PAR-X system makes it possible to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of zirconium and hafnium determination
