Description

For the safe design of transport and storage containers for nuclear materials impact damping materials and components are necessary. The common research project of BAM (Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung) and WTI (Wissenschaftlich-Technische Ingenieurberatung GmbH) on material's characteristics under defined dynamic loading was supported by the ministry. The project is focused on the development materials models for using polyurethane foam, damping concrete and wood based on experimental compression and drop tests that could improve numerical simulations. The working process is demonstrated using the example of polyurethane foam. The good agreement between the experimental data and the numerical simulations show the high quality of the experiments and the material models. The models are considered as prerequisite for future safe design of transport and storage casks for nuclear materials.
