Gamma rays and the cosmic-ray gradient away from the galactic centre

Description
The latitude distribution of gamma-rays in the Galactic anticentre as measured by the COS-B satellite is compared with that expected from interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. Both the variation in absolute magnitude and shape of the distribution suggest a low density of 1-10 GeV cosmic rays in the Perseus arm and beyond, confirming the Galactic origin of these particle
