Conversion of plutonium in HCl medium to PuO2 via oxalate precipitation

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay (India). Fuel Chemistry Division

Description

Plutonium dioxide was prepared from HCl medium via Pu(IV) or Pu(III) oxalate precipitation. Precipitation of Pu(IV)-oxalate was carried out from 3 to 4.5 M HCl and the losses of Pu in supernate and washings were in the range of 15-20 mg of Pu/L. Plutonium(III)-oxalate precipitation was adopted from 1-2 M HCl. The solubility of Pu in supernate was 40-70 mg of Pu/L. Losses of Pu in washings were reduced from >75 mg/L to 15 mg/L when ascorbic acid in place of hydrazine was used as holding reductant. (author). 6 refs., 2 tabs
