First PB+PB results from experiment NA49 and a comparison with S+A results from NA35

  • 1. Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physik, Muenchen (Germany)

Description

First results from the NA49 experiment with a lead beam on a lead target at the CERN-SPS at a beam energy of 158 GeV per nucleon are presented. Transverse energy production and rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of negative hadrons are discussed. First results on Bose-Einstein correlations of negative pions as a function of the transverse momentum are also given. These are compared to the corresponding results from experiment NA35 which investigates S+A reactions at a somewhat higher energy of 200 GeV per nucleon. (author)
