The quantitative analysis of arteritis induced by X-irradiation in rats

  • 1. Hiroshima Univ. (Japan). Research Inst. for Nuclear Medicine and Biology

Description

The arteritis induced by whole body or gastric region of X-irradiation was examined in both sexes 5- or 8-week-old rats. Arteritis showed fibrinoid necrosis with massive inflammatory cell infiltration, and elastic fibers and smooth muscle cells were partially or completely denatured. The outer layer of arteries replaced by the granulation and arterial walls were markedly thickened over 10 Gy fractions of X-irradiation but not under 5 Gy. Thickness of arterial walls was note on the dose response by using color image analyzer for quantitative analysis. Arteritis induced by X-irradiation in rats was promoted by NaCl, but alcohol did not influence for the development of arteritis. (author)
