Thermal analysis of heat generating waste in deep ocean sediments
Description
Time dependent thermal behaviour of sediment surrounding heat generating waste emplaced in the deep ocean floor has been investigated analytically for both the drilled hole and penetrator emplacement options. In both options peak sediment temperature rises of approx. 1200C are calculated, occuring at about 3 years and 8 years from emplacement for the drilled hole and penetrator respectively. Sediment temperatures were found to be sensitive to the waste heat loading and sediment thermal conductivity. The results of the present study reproduced closely the results of earlier studies.
