Proceedings of international KEK workshop on 'kaon, muon, neutrino physics and future'

Description

This workshop on 'Kaon, Muon, Neutrino Physics and Future' was held on October 31st, and November 1st, 1997 at KEK. About 97 experimental and theoretical physicists, among whom about 30 people came from abroad, joined this workshop to discuss enthusiastically and lively potential particle physics programs with kaon, muon and neutrino beams. There has been considerable progress and interest on the fields of rare kaon decays, rare muon decays and neutrino physics. They will be further increasing in future. At the same time, new experimental facilities, such as AGS-2000 and the FNAL Main Injector and the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) project, are being built or planned in the world to encourage and support seriously the physics opportunities of this field. At KEK, in particular, JHF which would provide a 50-GeV proton beam with 10 μA is considered as the next accelerator project with high priority. JHF, if built, would be an international facility, since the international cooperation is mandatory to carry out experiments of large scale. The main purpose of the workshop is to identify particle physics topics at the K arena of JHF, and at the same time to discuss experimental requirements on the accelerators and secondary-beam channels. The topics covered were, rare kaon decays and CP violation, rare muon decays with lepton flavor violation, neutrino physics (oscillation and double β decays), and experimental facilities. The 21 papers are indexed individually. (J.P.N.)
