The Nucoalyzer, an on-line nuclear analyser for coals and minerals
- 1. Science Applicatiions Inc., USA
Description
During the past six years, on-line nuclear analysers of coal have been developed and are now available commercially. These instruments, called Nucoalysers, represent a major advance in the real-time bulk analysis of aggregate minerals such as coal, iron and base-metal ores, and base minerals (e.g. phosphates and cement). On-line analysis, based on neutron-capture gamma-ray spectroscopy, is done non-intrusively without the need for sampling of sample preparation. This analysis of coal composition, ash content, and calorific value permits process control at the mine and beneficiation control at the preparation plant, and provides the power-plant operator with current information on the coal (e.g. fouling and slagging indices) prior to combustion so that he can take remedial action whenever necessary. The system ensures accurate blending so that the coal complies with the requirements for sulphur, constant ash, BTU, or any other desirable property. It also enables the producer to maximize his product while maintaining its quality. Nucoalyzers are flexible enough to be incorporated and integrated into plants and mines without the need for major redesign or construction efforts. Hence, both existing and future plants can benefit from these instruments. The theory of the Nucoalyzer and its application in practice are reviewed by reference to existing installations
